Conservative MP Joyce Bateman grew up in Winnipeg where her father was Chairman and CEO of Manitoba Hydro and her mother was an actuary. Music and swimming were two activities that played a large part in the Bateman household. Joyce continues to swim daily for exercise and her proficiency with the viola allowed her to pay her way at the University of Western Ontario by playing with the London Symphony Orchestra. Halfway through her studies, Joyce switched to business and became a chartered accountant. Back in Winnipeg, Joyce met Darryl, also a Chartered Accountant and they married and had two children together. Joyce was elected as a school trustee and served for over ten years before running in the 2011 election. Joyce defeated long-time Liberal incumbent Anita Neville by just over 700 votes.
