Liberal Senator Grant Mitchell may be best known for the 12 years he spent in the Alberta Legislature from 1986 to 1998, the last four as Opposition Leader. In 2005, then Prime Minister Paul Martin appointed Mitchell to the Senate in Ottawa, the town where he was born. Mitchell's father was in the military and it meant that the family moved frequently and thus Grant's first stay in Ottawa was short lived. Politics was always discussed around the dinner table and Grant caught the bug early, eventually becoming a parliamentary intern and a dinner guest of Pierre Elliot Trudeau's at 24 Sussex Drive. Grant attended Queen's and earned his MA in Political Science and more importantly met his future wife Teresa. The couple moved to Alberta where his wife started her law practice and Grant became a policy analyst with the Alberta government. They have three sons, Lucas, Liam and Grady.
