NDP MP Mike Sullivan was born in Detroit but moved across the river to Windsor when he was only 5. The Sullivans were a large family, six children, of which Mike was the eldest. Mike's dad taught at the University of Windsor and when Mike was 14 took his entire family with him on sabbatical to Oxford. Mike attended the University of Toronto and graduated with a degree in Math and Computer Science and found himself with a job at the CBC where he stayed for a number of years before taking on a position with the Communication, Energy and Paperworkers Union where he stayed for 27 years. In 2008, Mike was approached to run for the NDP in the Toronto riding of York South- Weston but fell 7,000 votes short to Liberal Alan Tonks. In 2011. Mike ran again and defeated Alan Tonks by nearly 3,000 votes. Catherine Clark spoke to Mike Sullivan about his life Beyond Politics.
