NDP MP Philip Toone was born into a politically active family in Ottawa. By the time he was 16 , Philip had become a supporter of the NDP having worked on several campaigns. When it came time to go to university Philip left Ottawa for Montreal and pursued a degree in history at Concordia and his attention had turned to student politics and was elected as president of the students association. During the ice storm of 1998 met he Martin, a medical student and when Martin was posted to the Gaspé, the couple decided to make the area their home. Philip returned to school and earned a law degree at the University of Ottawa and upon graduation set up a notarial practice in Carleton-sur-Mer. In 2011, Philip was asked to run for the NDP and was subsequently elected in the Orange wave that swept across Quebec.
