NDP MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan was first elected in May 2011 in a riding that had returned Liberals since 1988, and always with large pluralities.
It's difficult to pin Rathika's victory on any one thing, but was no doubt helped by a very strong work ethic that she inherited from her family. Born in Sri Lanka in 1982, Rathika came to Canada when she was only five, forced to flee the civil war ravaging her country.
Rathika began volunteering and helping community organizations when she was only nine. In 2004, she worked on Ed Broadbent's election campaign in Ottawa-Centre. Rathika earned a bachelor's degree in Commerce from Carleton and a master's degree in Industrial Relations from Queen's.
