Just because the House of Commons sits empty doesn’t mean MPs are off the job. They’ve spent the holiday break in their ridings. On the Bright Side caught up with several parliamentarians as they worked back home.
CELEBRATING IN MANITOBA
While many Canadians were tossing out their Christmas trees and packing away decorations, some Manitobans were just getting started. Conservative MP James Bezan takes us to Malanka, the celebration of the Ukrainian New Year. His Selkirk-Interlake riding is the heart of Canada’s Ukrainian community, and also home to the country’s largest Icelandic community.
And let’s not forget the other chamber. On the Bright Side visits Landmark, the longitudinal centre of Canada and home of Conservative Senator Don Plett.
ON THE STREET IN TORONTO
Heather Seaman ventures to Don Valley West, Ont. to join Liberal MP Rob Oliphant in a diverse riding with Canada’s highest proportion of Muslims. Oliphant introduces us to several vibrant community hubs. Heather also visits Liberal Carolyn Bennett in the nearby St. Paul’s riding for a meeting with constituents and governance experts.
BILLS AND MOTIONS IN B.C.
New Democrat MP Denise Savoie is garnering momentum for her private member’s bill to allow Canadian employers to offer tax-free benefits for commuters who choose cycling, car-pooling and public transit. We find out more with Savoie at the University of Victoria.
Every day, Canadians unwittingly break the law by purchasing wine in one province and consuming it in another. Conservative MP Ron Cannan wants to change that, not only to protect Canadian consumers, but also to help bolster a world-class wine industry. We’re in the Okanagan Valley to learn more about Cannan’s motion, which would also let Canadians buy directly from wineries.
