Heather Seaman heads to the world’s largest freshwater island, Manitoulin, to spend a day with NDP MP Carol Hughes. At the
southernmost corner of Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, we catch a mere glimpse of her 103,000-square-kilometre riding, the third-largest in Ontario. Thirty-two per cent of her constituents are Francophone; and 15 per cent are aboriginal.
Glen McInnis joins Conservative MP Shelly Glover in Saint Boniface, Man. About 16 per cent of the riding is French and it’s the only riding in western Canada that regularly elects francophone candidates to Parliament.
We stop in Simcoe North, Ont. for a chat with Conservative MP Bruce Stanton, who provides a tour of his expansive riding known as Ontario’s lake country.
Finally, a visit with Liberal MP Joyce Murray in Vancouver Quadra, one of Canada’s wealthiest ridings and home to the University of British Columbia.
HELPING THOSE WHO HELP US
Liberal MP Wayne Easter’s private member’s bill (C-240) would amend the Income Tax Act to allow volunteer emergency workers a tax deduction for more than 100 hours of service in a year. On the Bright Side spends a couple of hours with Easter at a fire hall in his P.E.I. riding to find out why he believes the bill is important.
MODELLING THE FUTURE
Puneet Birgi joins the 308 students attending the Queen’s Model Parliament in Ottawa, where young Canadians take on the role of MPs and debate legislation inside the House of Commons. We follow four students acting as party leaders during the three-day ‘mock’ parliament and talk to actual parliamentarians about the importance of inspiring young Canadians to take a greater role in public life.
