On the Bright Side

This week, a special look at International Women’s Day and women in politics.

“NICE WOMEN DON’T VOTE”
Voting is a fundamental right for all Canadians over 18, yet in Canada’s early days only a few privileged men could vote. Women were completely excluded. We look back at the events that led to women winning the franchise.

“ONE OF OUR GREAT POLITICIANS”
Former Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker once said: “Canada produced five great politicians. Agnes Macphail was one of them.” Glen Mcinnis brings us the story of Canada’s first female MP.

THE FAMOUS FIVE
Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby, and Nellie McClung, changed Canada’s political landscape forever in 1929, when women were finally recognized as persons under the BNA Act.

CHANGING THE FACE OF CANADIAN POLITICS
Heather Seaman talks with MPs and Senators from all parties who are trying to get more women in Parliament. Heather also visits Equal Voice’s summit on female leadership in the 21st century.

BALANCING THE BOARDS
A look at one Liberal Senator’s attempt to create gender parity for boards of directors in Canada.
