Glen McInnis continues his tour of Canada to see what MPs do during constituency weeks in their ridings. This week he’s on the north shore of Cape Breton Island to spend the day with Liberal Mark Eyking in Sydney-Victoria, N.S. Eyking’s riding stretches from Bras d’Or Lake north to Cabot Strait and St. Paul Island. The region is renowned for its rugged beauty and the infamous Cabot Trail that draws tourists every year. But is also has one of Canada’s highest unemployment rates. Glen talks to Eyking about what makes his riding. They also discuss an economic opportunity Eyking believes could have a positive impact for generations to come.
Glen also visits NDP whip Yvon Godin in Acadie-Bathurst, N.B. during Veterans’ Week. The riding is 84-per-cent francophone – the highest percentage for any riding outside Quebec. How does Godin interact with constituents when he’s home?
Hard work and persistence pay off for a London, Ontario community as a commemorative flag feature they fought long and hard to make a reality is unveiled along Veteran’s Memorial Parkway. On the Bright Side joins NDP MP Irene Mathyssen, who first brought public attention to the project after she was approached by retired Master Cpl. Ed Duffney, Legion members and other community groups. Conservative MPs Joe Preston and Ed Holder are also on hand to celebrate the collaborative effort of all three levels of government on the project that benefitted from federal stimulus funding.
Heritage Minister James Moore rolls out yet another red carpet for an Ottawa movie premiere. This time it’s for Barney’s Version, based on the renowned novel by the late Mordecai Richler. MPs and Senators joined Richler’s widow, cast members, producers, and over 1,000 other moviegoers in support of Canada’s film industry.
