Each year, from November 5 to 11, Canadians join together to celebrate Veterans’ Week Hundreds of commemorative ceremonies and events will take place across the country to recognize the achievements of our veterans and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa is the national military cemetery of the Canadian Forces. Glen visits the cemetery with Liberal MP Mauril Bélanger to talk about Bill C-17, the private member's bill he introduced in 2009 that designated Beechwood as the national cemetery. At the time, Bélanger asked fellow Ottawa MPs Royal Galipeau (Conservative) and Paul Dewar (NDP) for support, which they did without hesitation.

If you ever thought your voice couldn’t make a difference, learn a lesson from one of New Democrat MP Malcolm Allen’s constituents. Last October, a Legion member in Allen’s Welland, Ont. riding walked into his office demanding to know why his colleagues were paying GST on the poppies for their annual fundraiser leading up to Remembrance Day. His question was the catalyst for a private member’s bill to make the poppies tax exempt. At the same time, other veterans picked up on the story and got three separate government departments investigating the matter. The result? Just days after Governor General David Johnston received the first poppy of the 2011 campaign, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, Veterans Affairs Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn and Defence Minister Peter MacKay jointly announced that poppies would be eligible for a full rebate on the federal sales tax.
