It's been said that "all politics is local." Members of Parliament spend approximately 28 weeks in Ottawa; the other 24 weeks are normally for their ridings. While there, MPs meet with constituents to resolve problems, keep informed about local issues, solicit feedback on matters discussed in Parliament, and attend a wide variety of functions. During constituency weeks On The Bright Side will travel to different parts of Canada to catch up with MPs as they return home and engage with the people they represent. This month we’re in Alberta; next month Canada’s east coast.
On the Bright Side host Glen McInnis spends the day in the Edmonton-LeDuc riding of Conservative MP James Rajotte. Home to the largest oil and gas industrial park north of Houston, it’s no wonder this community south of Edmonton is considered the most recession-resistant riding in the country. We find out what Rajotte is doing to continue to encourage investment into the region.
Glen also visits NDP MP Linda Duncan in her riding of Edmonton-Strathcona. Duncan is the only non-Conservative MP in Alberta. We find out how she works to balance the interests of small business and environmentalists in Alberta’s cultural and historical hub.
Heather Seaman joins Markham-Unionville MP and Liberal finance critic John McCallum at the Young Entrepreneurs Awards in his riding. He’s joined by Conservative MP Paul Calandra, who represents Oak Ridges-Markham. The pair come together – as they often do when issues cross party lines - to share their financial knowledge with these budding business owners.
On the Bright Side joins Members of Parliament Stephen Woodworth and Peter Braid and hundreds of talented trades and technology students at the 16th Canadian Skills Competition in Waterloo.
