October 19th was the Canada Day of Action for a federal housing strategy. Grassroots organizations gathered on Parliament Hill to rally in support of New Democrat MP Libby Davies' bill which went to third reading the following day. The bill seeks to bring together all levels of government to enact a plan for more safe, affordable housing across Canada. Glen McInnis talks to Davies about her bill, which is garnering support from MPs from other parties – including
Liberals Mike Savage and Gerard Kennedy, Senator Art Eggleton and Conservative Peter Goldring.
Glen spends the day in the B.C. riding of West Vancouver- Sunshine Coast -Sea to- Sky Country with Conservative MP John Weston. Weston’s riding is home to three large pulp and paper mills and has Canada’s largest seniors’ population. In recognition of Persons Day on October 18, New Democrat MP Denise Savoie, Labour Minister Lisa Raitt, Liberal MP Hedy Fry, and Bloc Québécois MP Nicole Demers talk to 100 students invited to Parliament Hill about “elevating debate” in the House of Commons.
Liberal MP Andrew Kania says his riding of Brampton West is a good representation of Canadian diversity: 54 per cent of residents are visible minorities, compared to the 23-per-cent national average. We join Kania on a busy day in his riding as he meets with staff at his constituency office, moderates a palliative care forum, and visits new parents at Brampton Civic Hospital and patients at the state-of-the-art hospital's rehabilitation centre. Later in the day, he is honoured by the Sikh community, which has welcomed him with open arms, and accepts an award from the local Sikh Sports Club.
