On the Bright Side

It's Thanksgiving and World Food Week is underway. What better time to catch up with NDP agriculture critic Alex Atamanenko at a family-run winery in southwestern Ontario, where the grapes are ripe for harvest. Atamanenko recently wrapped up an 18-month pan-Canadian consultation with environmental groups, farmers, farm market operators and others about a food security policy that ensures "access to safe, culturally-appropriate, nutritious food." Food for Thought has received support from other parties and the MP believes his grassroots study could form the cornerstone of government policy.

MPs Joy Smith and Terence Young bring attention to the urgent need, especially in First Nations communities, for Canadians to register as stem cell and bone marrow donors. We visit them as they encourage fellow parliamentarians to participate in their One Swab, One Match, One Life event on Parliament Hill.

On the Bright Side catches up with Conservative MP Cathy McLeod. Why did the former nurse feel compelled to create a motion committing the government to “lessen the burden” on Canada’s healthcare system?

Liberal MP Glen Pearson is known for his humanitarian work in Sudan. Last year he successfully asked the government for $3 million for internally displaced people in the troubled Darfur region. Pearson is now seeking another $6 million. He’s the opposition development critic but has been criticized by caucus colleagues for not attacking International Cooperation Minister Bev Oda. Pearson says his style is to work with people at getting aid where it needs to go. Heather Seaman meets up with Pearson in his London North Centre riding to talk about his efforts to increase funding for Africa, his belief in co-operation between parties, and his own inspirational adoption story.

Heritage Minister James Moore hosts his fourth movie night – a special screening of Incendies, a movie by Denis Villeneuve. Puneet Birgi talks to Moore, the film’s director, stars, and MPs about the import
