For many Canadians, Question Period is Parliament and what they see is not something they are impressed with. As a result Canadians are becoming increasingly apolitical. Conservative MP Michael Chong is determined to reform Question Period with a private member’s motion. Glen McInnis talks with Chong about how he wants to make a positive change in how Parliament operates and bridge the growing gap between Canadians and their democratic institutions. Glen also attends “Question Question Period,” a panel discussion organized by the Public Policy Forum featuring scholars, and parliamentarians past and present, discussing different methods of improving the tenor and tone of debate in the House of Commons.
According to the United Nations, more than 1,700 have died and close to 21 million have been affected by last month’s flooding in Pakistan. Entire towns and villages have been inundated by the flood waters and yet media attention on this devastation is dwindling. Liberal MP Jim Karygiannis is keen to make sure the plight of the Pakistani people stays in the headlines. This week he funded his own trip to Pakistan to take part in humanitarian and rebuilding work. Heather Seaman met up with Karygiannis a few days before he left to talk about his work outside the halls of Parliament and why it is important for Canada.
