For the first time in more than four decades, the Progressive Conservative party's grip on power is being seriously challenged by the upstart Wildrose Alliance, led by political newcomer Danielle Smith.
While Albertans enjoy a booming economy and above-average growth, there is concern that the PC party of old has changed since Ralph Klein's departure. Budget deficits have become too common under former leader Ed Stelmach, and now Alison Redford and ill-timed political scandals have rocked the foundations of this legendary political force.
The desire for change could spell the end to a dynasty and leave Albertans with either a new premier or a minority government. Trying to find space in a battle between two right-of-centre parties are the Liberals led by Raj Sherman and the NDP under Brian Mason.
