Campaign Politics

Brampton West

Brampton West is the heart of Battleground Ontario. It’s the country’s most populous riding, one of the youngest ridings in the country, and one of the most diverse. More than 50 per cent of people in the riding are immigrants. The Liberals hold it. The Conservatives want to take it. And nobody’s pulling any punches. Accusations of sign theft and election financing fraud have dogged the campaigns of the leading candidates. Liberal incumbent Andrew Kania is confident of a second win. He’s got support of the union leadership in the region and he believes his party’s policies resonate with the ever-growing number of families in the city. Kyle Seeback is the Conservative candidate. The well-known lawyer lost by just 231 votes to Kania in 2008. Both the NDP’s Jagtar Shergill and the Green Party’s Avtaar Soor are running strong campaigns.

CPAC’s Karen Soloman gives us a closer look at the issues and how they’re playing out in the final week of the campaign.
