Haute-Gaspésie—La Mitis—Matane—Matapédia
For 18 years now, voters in the Quebec riding of Haute-Gaspésie—La Mitis—Matane—Matapédia have sent a Bloc Québécois MP to Ottawa. For the past 6 elections, they have been represented by veteran MP Jean-Yves Roy. But Roy has retired, and now Michael Ignatieff's Liberals are hoping to break the Bloc stranglehold on this riding in the Lower St. Lawrence. Their candidate, Nancy Charest, a former member of Jean Charest's Liberal government in Quebec City, only lost to the Bloc in the last election by 614 votes. And, as Martin Stringer reports, this time she feels she can win. The Bloc's new face is Jean-François Fortin, a political scientist and former local mayor. The Conservative’s Allen Cormier, Green candidate Louis Drainville and the NDP’s Joanie Boulet are also running.
