Oak Ridges-Markham
In 2008, Paul Calandra’s victory in the Toronto area riding of Oak Ridges-Markham was seen as significant step in the Conservatives’ plans to gain a foothold in the Toronto region. Calandra’s margin was small, 545 votes, and his Liberal opponent Lui Temelkovski is the same one he defeated in 2008. Temelkovski is hoping to take this riding back into the Liberal fold but this riding is a difficult one to characterize. It is both rural and urban. Residents are both new Canadians and long-established Ontario families. There is new money and old money. Pro-development and pro-conservation. And finding a message that appeals to this wide spectrum has been a challenge to all the candidates running here. Janice Hagan is the NDP candidate, Trifon Haitas is running for the Green Party and John Siciliano is carrying the colours of the Progressive Canadian Party.
