On March 19th, voters in the riding of Toronto-Danforth will go to the polls in a by-election to replace Jack Layton. In last May’s election, the late NDP leader won the riding with more than 60% of the vote, winning every poll in the riding. So, will Jack Layton’s legacy and almost iconic status guarantee the NDP’s re-election in the riding? Since its creation in the 1970’s, Toronto Danforth has been both a Liberal and NDP stronghold. This is the first time the NDP goes into an election as the Official Opposition in Ottawa, and the first time the Liberals make their pitch to voters as the third party in Parliament. Martin Stringer follows NDP candidate Craig Scott, Liberal Grant Gordon, Conservative Andrew Keyes, and Green candidate Adrianna Mugnatto-Hamu. Issues on the doorstep include: immigration, old age security, the economy, and the Harper government’s track record.
