In Committee From The House Of Commons

Canadian Heritage

Federal Heritage Minister James Moore discusses the government's plan to rename the Canadian Museum of Civilization as the Canadian Museum of History. Bill C-49 would amend the Museums Act to change the museum's name and mandate. The transition will take place over the next several years in order to be ready for Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017. Located in Gatineau, Quebec, the museum is Canada’s largest cultural institution.

MPs also hear from the following witnesses: Mark O'Neill, president and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation and his colleague David Morrison; Canadian Museums Association representatives John McAvity and Kirstin Evenden; James Turk from the Canadian Association of University Teachers; Queens University professor Victor Rabinovitch (as an individual); Lorne Holyoak of the Canadian Anthropology Society; and Anthony Wilson-Smith from the Historica-Dominion Institute.
