Senators continue their examination on innovation in the agriculture and agri-food sector.
Representatives from the University of Saskatchewan appear before the committee. Dr. Sheila Schmutz from the Department of Animal and Poultry Science discusses the need for additional marketing of livestock to Europe and the importance of urban agriculture. Dr. Reuben Mapletoft of the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences outlines the importance of increasing the amount of protein being exported to third world countries and increasing investment in research and development in agriculture.
Dela Erith from the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers' Association discusses the challenges to maintaining a profitable agricultural sector in the province. Brian Gilroy of the Ontario Apple Growers talks about the difficulties associated with growing apples and the need to develop new markets and enhance agricultural sustainability.
