Human Rights - June 26, 2013

In Committee from the Senate of Canada

Human Rights

Senators conduct their clause-by-clause consideration of a private member's bill (C-304) to repeal Section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act, which bans hate speech transmitted over the Internet or by telephone. The bill from Conservative MP Brian Storseth also seeks to repeal Section 54, which deals with associated penalties. Hate speech would still be prohibited under the Criminal Code.

UPDATE: Bill C-304 received royal assent on June 26.
