In Committee from the Senate of Canada

Legal and Constitutional Affairs

Senators deal with two pieces of legislation, starting first with clause-by-clause review of Bill S-12. This bill amends the Statutory Instruments Act to provide for the express power to incorporate by reference in regulations.

Committee members then turn their attention to Bill C-36, the government's elder abuse legislation. Doris Grinspun, CEO of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, William Trudell, chair of the Canadian Council of Criminal Defence Lawyers, Maria Neill, a detective with the Ottawa Police Service's elder abuse unit, and Morel Caissie, president of the Canadian Association of Social Workers, present their views of the bill.

UPDATE: Bill C-36 received royal assent on December 14.
