In Committee from the Senate of Canada

National Finance

Senators hold three panels on different divisions contained in the government's budget implementation bill (C-60).

Canadian Media Guild representatives Carmel Smyth and Jeanne D'Arc Umurungi outline their concerns with a controversial measure that will allow for direct government involvement in collective bargaining negotiations at 49 Crown corporations such as the CBC, Canada Post and VIA Rail.

Jack Mintz from the University of Calgary School of Public Policy and Gary Rogers with the Credit Union Central of Canada discuss a measure to phase out an additional deduction for credit unions over five years.

Frank Swedlove and Ron Sanderson, who are both with Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association Inc., comment on amendments which would allow Canadian financial institutions greater flexibility to appoint non-residents as committee members of their boards of directors.

UPDATE: Bill C-60 received royal assent on June 26.
