In Committee from the Senate of Canada

Official Languages

Federal Official Languages Commissioner Graham Fraser and New Democrat MP Alexandrine Latendresse discusses her bill (C-419) that would require bilingualism for 10 key Parliament positions, including those of auditor general, chief electoral officer and official languages commissioner. Michael Ferguson's appointment as auditor general in 2011 was greatly criticized due to his inability to speak French. The bill received unanimous support in the House of Commons at both second and third reading.

Senators conduct clause-by-clause consideration of the bill after hearing from the witnesses.

UPDATE: Bill C-419 received royal assent on June 26.
