Labour Minister Lisa Raitt and Human Resources Minister Diane Finley brief the committee on Bill C-44, which would allow for work leave when a child is critically ill, dies, or disappears as the "probable result of a crime." Employment Insurance benefits would also be extended to those caring for a critically ill child.
Mireille Laroche from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, Sue O'Sullivan, the federal ombudsman for victims of crime, and Michel Surprenant from the Association of Families of Persons Assassinated or Disappeared also present their views on the bill.
UPDATE: Bill C-44 received royal assent on December 14.
