2nd Session—33rd Parliament

The House resumes its debate on the 1987 constitutional amendment (the Meech Lake Accord); participants include Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, John Turner (Leader of the Opposition), Ed Broadbent, Patrick Boyer, Charles L. Caccia, Donald J. Johnston, Alex Kindy, Howard McCurdy, Monique B. Tardif (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Health and Welfare), Gilles Grondin, Lorne Nystrom, David Berger, Ian Waddell, Audrey McLaughlin, Ernie Epp, Raymond Garneau, and Marcel Prud’homme.

Leading off Question Period is an exchange between Mr. Turner and Mr. Mulroney over the proposed acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines; this is followed by questions for John C. Crosbie (Minister for International Trade) about the effects of the Canada–U.S. Free Trade Agreement on water resources. Finance Minister Michael Wilson responds to questions on tax reform.

The House is summoned to the Senate chamber to witness the granting of the royal assent to a number of bills.

Reginald Stackhouse introduces a private member’s motion concerning a housing shortage in Toronto, Ont.; there are speeches by Sergio Marchi, Dan Heap, John Oostrom, and Shirley Martin (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works).

On a recorded vote, members vote down a subamendment by Nelson A. Riis to a motion to extend the House’s sitting hours over the summer months.
