House of Commons Debates

2nd Session—33rd Parliament

Members resume their consideration of a motion to extend the House’s hours of sitting for the summer months; participants in the debate include Jean-Robert Gauthier, Jim Manly, Doug Lewis (Minister of State for the Treasury Board), Sheila Copps, John R. Rodriguez, Don Blenkarn, Keith Penner, Rob Nicholson, Simon de Jong, Len Hopkins, Reginald Stackhouse, and Bill Blaikie.

The abandonment of the Newfoundland Railway is the dominant topic in Question Period as Deputy Prime Minister Don Mazankowski fields questions on the subject from Brian Tobin, William Rompkey, Jack Harris, and others; Perrin Beatty (Minister of National Defence) is asked about the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines.

Mr. Gauthier introduces a private member’s motion on the participation of public servants in electoral activities; there are speeches by David Daubney, Mr. Harris, Claudy Mailly (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue), and Gaston Isabelle.

The House votes on amendments to a motion concerning Bill C-55, a bill to amend the Immigration Act. Members also vote on an amendment to the motion to extend the House’s hours of sitting.
