The Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar

Witness: Léo Martel

The commission hears testimony from Léo Martel (former Canadian Consul in Damascus, Syria), who visited Mr. Arar eight times during Mr. Arar’s detention in Syria. Mr. Martel is asked by Commission Counsel Paul J. J. Cavalluzzo about his statement that Mr. Arar was a “liar,” allegedly made in response to a lawsuit by Mr. Arar. Marlys Edwardh (Counsel for Mr. Arar) continues cross-examination of Mr. Martel. Lines of questioning include Mr. Martel’s response to Mr. Arar’s lawsuit and the provision of consular services to Mr. Arar including the arrangement of legal counsel.
