Commission of Inquiry into Certain Allegations Respecting Business and Financial Dealings Between Karlheinz Schreiber and the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney
Witnesses: Harry Swain, Robert Hladun
The Commission continues to hear testimony from Harry Swain (a former assistant secretary in the Privy Council Office), with Commission Counsel Giuseppe Battista resuming examination. Mr. Swain describes persistent bureaucratic opposition to the Canadian government’s involvement with the Bear Head Project, a proposed manufacturing plant for military vehicles in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He is also asked about a September 1988 “understanding in principle” between the government and Bear Head Industries. There are short cross-examinations by François Grondin (Counsel for Mr. Mulroney) and Robert Houston (Counsel for Fred Doucet), followed by a brief re-examination by Mr. Battista. Commission Counsel Evan Roitenberg conducts examination of Robert Hladun (an attorney for Mr. Schreiber). Mr. Hladun is asked about correspondence with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) concerning evidence of financial dealings between Mr. Schreiber and Mr. Mulroney.
