Updating Canada's Prisons

On June 7, 2012, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews addressed the Economic Club of Canada in Ottawa. In his speech, titled "Canada's Correctional Reality: Why Closing Prisons Makes Sense," Minister Toews outlined the federal government's plans for Canada's correctional system.

Recently, the federal government announced plans to build 2,700 new cells within existing federal facilities and to close two older prisons, Kingston Penitentiary in Ontario and Leclerc Institution in Laval, Quebec. Kingston Penitentiary, which opened in 1835, has housed some of Canada's most notorious criminals. Leclerc Institution has served as a medium-security facility for male offenders since 1961.
