PrimeTime Politics Weekend

Join Martin Stringer and his journalist guests: John Geddes, Ottawa Bureau Chief for Maclean's magazine, and Elizabeth Thompson of iPolitics.
They'll discuss:

1. Canada & Palestinian Statehood:
The Harper government agrees with the U.S. administration when Barack Obama argues that U.N. recognition of Palestine statehood is premature: that issues such as borders and the representation of Gaza must first be worked out in negotiations between Israel & the Palestinians.

How is the issue playing out among the political parties here in Canada?

2. The NDP and the return of Parliament:
We look at interim leader Nicole Turmel's first week as leader in the House of Commons, and the latest on the leadership race to replace Jack Layton.

3. A high-flying government?

What should we make of reports of the use of challenger jets by the Chief of Defence Staff, the Defence minister, and senior Defence Department personnel? And the minister's excursion from a fishing lodge on a Search & Rescue helicopter?

4. Cost-cutting & Consultants:
The government is spending $2 million - or $90,000 a day - on a private consulting firm to help it decide where to make cuts in the Public Service.

What should we make of the pricey advice?
How does it fit into the bigger picture of the $4 billion a year in cuts the Harper government hopes to make?

5. The Session to Come:

What should we expect in the Fall session?

Also, we'll have coverage of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's speech before the U.N. General Assembly in New York - asking the international community to recognize full Palestinian statehood - and of the speech by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the U.N.

And, Martin speaks with NDP Interim Leader Nicole Turmel about her first week in the House as Leader of the Official Opposition.
