2012 Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case
In 1929, five women from Alberta, known as "the Famous Five," won a historic legal battle to have women recognized as persons in Canada and therefore eligible to hold appointed or elected office. In 1979, the Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case were established to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this landmark decision. The awards, presented by Governor General David Johnston in a ceremoy at Rideau Hall, honour Canadian women who have contributed to the advancement of women's equality.
The 2012 recipients are Caroline Andrew, Corinne Gallant, Régine Alende Tshombokongo and youth award recipients Saara Bhanji and Joanne Cave. (October 18, 2012)
