Ken Rockburn talks to consumer advocate, lawyer and author Ralph Nader. Nader’s relationship with Canada began when he was a young boy growing up in Winsted, Connecticut. He would spend several summers with his cousins on Lake Simcoe, north of Toronto. A graduate of Harvard Law School, Nader taught for a few years and then went to work on Capitol Hill under Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Nader caught the world’s attention in the early 1960s after he published Unsafe At Any Speed, a sharp condemnation of the American automobile industry.
In the 1970s Nader focused his sights on large-scale polluters and used his prominent status to criticize American industry for its careless attitude towards the environment. In 1996 Nader ran for U.S. president as the Green Party candidate. Nader finished fourth behind Ross Perot with less than 1% of the vote. Undeterred, Nader ran again in 2000 and was roundly criticized for taking votes away from the Democrat Al Gore, who lost a close race to George W. Bush.
A champion for the individual, an outspoken advocate of the American people, a relentless critic of irresponsible corporations, Nader is also a prolific author. His latest book, Only the Super-Rich Can Save Us, was published just last year. Ken Rockburn spoke to Ralph Nader in Washington.
