Hélène Lavervière was elected as the NDP MP for the Quebec riding of Laurier—Sainte-Marie on May 2, 2011, defeating Bloc Quebéeois Leader, Gilles Duceppe, who had held that seat since 1990.
Born in 1955, Ms. Laverdière earned a Doctorate in Sociology from the University of Bath, in the U.K. Before launching her political career, she had worked as a sociology professor at Laval University and as a diplomat for the Department of Foreign Affairs. Her diplomatic postings took her to Washington, Dakar and Santiago.
