BUDGET BATTLE LINES: The federal government says its budget is about prosperity, not austerity. This was the first budget delivered by a Harper majority government and one poorly received by the opposition. Highlights include $5.2 billion in cuts to annual federal spending; the elimination of over 19,000 federal positions; and a shift in the age of eligibility for Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement from 65 to 67, starting in 2023. Does this budget transform government and the country? Did it go far enough—or does it go too far—in cutting spending to reduce the deficit?
MULCAIR AND THE NDP: The new NDP leader hit the ground running this week. Thomas Mulcair led the Official Opposition for the first time in Question Period, addressed his caucus on Wednesday, and faced off for the first time with the prime minister on budget day.
