The Week with Mark Sutcliffe

This Sunday, Mark welcomes:

• Elizabeth Thompson, Senior Political Writer for iPolitics.ca
• Andrew Cohen, columnist and professor for Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication

Viewers are also invited to call or write in with their thoughts about the week’s big political stories:

TREATY TURMOIL The prime minister called the NDP extremist for saying it would cancel the China-Canada investment treaty if it didn't meet Canadian interests. Should Canada ratify this treaty? Should it have been debated in Parliament? Or is the opposition misleading Canadians, as the government indicates?

U.S. PRESIDENTIAL VOTE Polls indicate a very close race between Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat Barack Obama. How might Canada-U.S. relations change with Romney or Obama as president these next four years?

IMMIGRATION REFORM The Harper government plans to fast-track immigration for foreign students who have studied in Canada as well as temporary foreign workers. One report says an internal government survey shows a decline in the number of Canadians who think immigration is having a positive effect on the economy. Why is that? And is targeting foreign students and temporary workers a smart move?

“THE TRUDEAU EFFECT” A poll says if a federal election were held tomorrow with Justin Trudeau as Liberal leader, the party would win a majority government. Just how powerful is the Trudeau name? How much of a chance does Trudeau have of becoming the next Liberal prime minister?
