In the House - Tuesday

Tue Dec 11 2012

Second-reading debate continues on Bill C-15, along with report-stage debate on Bill C-37.

MPs return to report stage debate on Bill C-377.

Several amendments by the sponsor, Conservative MP Russ Hiebert, and Liberal labour critic Rodger Cuzner are on the agenda.

The legislation from Conservative MP Russ Hiebert would impose a summary conviction and a $1,000 daily fine on unions that don't comply with new reporting requirements, which include:

  • financial statements
  • transactions and investments over $5,000
  • loans issued and received over $250
  • spending on political activities, lobbying, and gifts

The information would be posted online.

The bill was deemed to have returned from the Standing Committee on Finance with no changes.

Read submissions to the Commons finance committee by unions and other associations

The opposition NDP calls the bill a "direct attack against unions," calling it unnecessary and costly to implement.
