A fourth vacancy has opened up in the House of Commons with Conservative Merv Tweed planning to retire at the end of August.
Tweed, 58, posted the announcement on his website Monday morning. He has represented Brandon--Souris, Man. since 2004 and now plans to "pursue opportunities in the private sector."
“I have had the honour to serve the public for many years at the municipal, provincial and federal level and my decision to leave politics was not made lightly. Politics has been a major part of my life for many years and I will certainly miss its responsibilities and challenges," Tweed said in the statement.
Tweed currently chairs the transport committee. He previously headed the agriculture committee.
The Brandon--Souris area has elected Conservative or Progressive Conservative MPs since the early 1950s with one exception: Liberal Glen McKinnon (1993-1997).
Tweed's departure means the riding will have a by-election, along with Provencher, Man., Toronto Centre, Ont., and Bourassa, Que. By-elections must be called within 180 days of Elections Canada receiving a notice of vacancy from the Speaker of the House.
