Beyond Politics

Conservative MP Tom Lukiwski's father was an influential union organizer in Saskatchewan and once ran for the CCF. His mother was the first nurse to practice on Canada's air ambulance service and died from cancer when Tom was only 16. Tom was an active teenager, playing sports and excelling at golf, becoming a member of the province's Willington Cup team. He was also active in politics, working on campaigns for the provincial NDP, but when Tom started working full time, Tom moved to the right and became active in the Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan. Tom spent many years with the Grant Devine Conservatives and later the Saskatchewan Party. In 2004, after both of his children were grown, Tom decided to run for the federal Conservatives in the riding of Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre, he won, and has relished the challenges that have come with being an MP. Tom Lukiwski talks to Catherine Clark about his childhood in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, his wife Diane and their two artistically gifted children, Tyler and Ryland on Beyond Politics.

His father was a labour leader. Good thing that wasn't in Colombia.
