Right to Know Week
From September 28
th to October 2
nd, 2009, in Ottawa, a series of events was organized by the Office of the Information Commissioner to mark "Right to Know" week. The purpose of Right to Know (RTK) Week is to raise awareness about people's right to access government information while promoting freedom of information as essential to both democracy and good governance.
The first session on
September 28th was a National Town Hall to examine Citizens' Engagement and State Accountability. Among the speakers were
Lisa Campbell (Interim Assistant Commissioner, Office of the Information Commissioner of Canada),
Suzanne Legault (Interim Commissioner, Office of the Information Commissioner of Canada),
David Akin (National Affairs correspondent for Canwest News Service),
Ben Leapman (Sunday Telegraph, UK),
David McKie (CBC investigative journalist),
Kerry Pither (Human rights and civil liberties advocate) and
Jeff Sallot (Carleton University journalism instructor).
