On the Bright Side
This week
On The Bright Side commemorates the 80
th anniversary of the "Persons Case". Correspondent
Puneet Birgi brings us the story of the five Alberta women, now known as the "Famous Five," who in the early 20
th century challenged the existing status of women. Their arduous struggle is now part of the historic landscape of Canada.
Glen McInnis looks at women in politics- when they first set foot in the House, and how many more steps they still need to take. According to Equal Voice, Canadians want to see the names of more women on the ballots. The multi-partisan organization is not alone. Glen talks with Senators and MPs from all parties, who are working hard to get more women into the House of Commons.
Driven, compassionate, outspoken are just some of the words used, over the years, to describe Senator
Anne Cools. In 1984 she became the first black person appointed to the Canadian Senate and with that distinction she also became the first black female Senator in North America.
On the Bright Side's
Heather Seaman has her inspiring story.
Glen McInnis also drops in to spend five minutes with
Niki Ashton, NDP Member of Parliament for Churchill, who is Canada's youngest female MP.
