On the Bright Side

Board game fever has spread across the country as cities battle to win a place on the new Monopoly Canada board. And MPs are joining the fray. Glen McInnis heads east to join the NDP’s Megan Leslie (Halifax, N.S.) to ask Haligonians why their community merits a spot. Glen also met Conservative Daryl Kramp (Prince Edward-Hastings, Ont.) to hear from constituents about why Belleville should be the next Broadway. And Brittany Wong visits Liberal MP Hedy Fry (Vancouver-Centre, B.C.) to gauge opinions on the west coast.

Women comprise a little over 20 per cent of the House of Commons, while ethnic minorities are at 5.8 per cent. MPs from all of Canada’s mainstream parties are seeking ways to increase diversity in Parliament and better reflect the country’s constantly shifting population. As we report, all agree that it requires political will and cooperation across partisan lines.

A moving personal experience can often shape the life and work of a Member of Parliament. Conservative Mike Lake (Edmonton-Mill Woods-Beaumont, AB) has made autism a central issue on his parliamentary agenda thanks to his 13-year-old son Jaden. We visit Mike in Edmonton and Ottawa, where he campaigns for the all-party development of a national autism strategy.

We want to know from MPs: What’s the best-kept secret in your riding? What are you reading right now? It’s our Ask an MP segment.
