Career Opportunity: Translator

The Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC) is Canada’s window on parliament, politics and public affairs. As Canada’s only national, bilingual media outlet focused exclusively on politics, we are unique in the Canadian media landscape. We are seeking an energetic, detail-oriented translator to contribute to our coverage of Canada’s democracy in action.

THE ROLE:

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced candidate who is capable of quickly translating content from English to French and French to English for live television, digital, online, and print applications. Accuracy and speed are essential.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Produce flawless and creative translations appropriate for television, digital, web, and print within extremely tight deadlines;
  • Proof read and revise, in both English and French, name and context keys for live television, digital and web content, corporate correspondence as well as a variety of other documents.

QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED):

  • Translation certificate or degree in translation from a recognized institution;
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience;
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; exceptional ability to multitask;
  • Proficient in Word and other word-processing software, use of online terminology tools and resources such as Antidote, CP journalistic writing style;
  • General knowledge of CPAC programming, Canadian politics, broadcasting terminology;
  • Knowledge of Dalet and Broadview television software considered an asset;
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team of translators;
  • Ability to keep sensitive material confidential and communicate with internal and external clients in a professional manner;
  • Ability to work flexible, irregular hours and overtime as required.

Hours of work for this position are between 12pm-8pm.

Career Opportunity: Assistant Producer – Web and Digital Content (Part time)

The Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC) is Canada’s window on Parliament, politics and public affairs. As Canada’s only national, bilingual media outlet focused exclusively on politics, we are unique in the Canadian media landscape. We are seeking a dynamic journalist to work as an Assistant Producer – Web and Digital Content to contribute to our coverage of Canada’s democracy in action.

THE ROLE:

CPAC is seeking an enthusiastic and meticulous individual to join our editorial team. Based in Ottawa just steps from Parliament Hill, this is a great opportunity for a journalist/producer who welcomes new challenges and thrives in a fast-paced environment. The chosen individual will possess strong writing and production skills along with current skills in all social media and digital video platforms. Bilingualism is an asset.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Schedules and operates livestreams on the CPAC website and social media accounts;
  • Researches and writes descriptions and other public metadata for video appearing on the CPAC website and social media platforms; works with the Web Editor and translators to ensure the accuracy and integrity of descriptive text in both English and French;
  • Edits programs and video segments for publication on CPAC’s website and social media accounts;
  • Monitors incoming video feeds and news sources to assist in identifying and describing appropriate content for publication as digital-first video;
  • Edits the daily replay of Question Period for air on CPAC TV; describes and edits House and Senate committees when required;
  • Assists with the researching, description, cataloguing and editing of archival video content as required;
  • Ensures that all content is entered into CPAC’s Digital Archive according to CPAC editorial and technological standards;
  • Maintain accurate activity logs and provide regular progress updates and reports;
  • Assist with diagnosing and resolving technical problems.

QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED):

  • A degree or diploma in journalism, TV production or related discipline and two years of comparable and relevant experience;
  • A keen interest in politics and the business of democracy;
  • A strong understanding of journalism practices and broadcast standards;
  • Excellent writing skills, including familiarity with Canadian Press style;
  • Possesses excellent research, writing and editing skills, with a high attention to detail;
  • Familiarity with video editing platforms and content management systems considered an asset;
  • Initiative and ability to plan, prioritize and organize workflow;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills;
  • Must be independent, self-motivated and self-sufficient;
  • Ability to work flexible hours and weekends as required;
  • Preference may be given to candidates who are fully bilingual in English and French.

This is a casual, part time position.

Career Opportunity: Master Control Operator (Part Time)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complete playback of programming with closed captioning according to traffic schedule while ensuring that technical standards are met, and procedures are followed;
  • Respond to scheduling changes promptly and advise appropriate personnel in a timely manner;
  • Responsible for quality evaluation, troubleshooting, acquisition, and recording of multiple incoming signals;
  • Communicate effectively with feed originators, live production staff, producers, traffic, and management;
  • Accountable for the proper transmission and monitoring of the broadcast signals. Report any faults and abnormalities in transmission of the television signal;
  • Effectively operate the automation system, asset management software, and various peripheral equipment in the master control facility;
  • Work with engineering staff to report faults and ensure that integrity of master control facility is not compromised. Perform basic troubleshooting and equipment maintenance as required;
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED):

  • Personal Qualities: Innovation/Creative Thinking, Problem Solving/Judgement, Listening, Understanding and Responding, Interpersonal Skills;
  • Ability to work to exacting standards and procedures under high stress situations;
  • Must be a team player, able to communicate with other operators, management, and station personnel;
  • Must be able to work without supervision;
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, push, pull, reach, walk, and sit for extended periods of time;
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing;
  • Completion of a post-secondary television broadcasting program or equivalent experience in a television master control;
  • Knowledge of how to use waveform/vectorscope monitors and professional audio/sound field monitors;
  • Knowledge of various production equipment including servers, routers, switchers, graphic systems. Prior experience with Dalet, Chyron graphics, Crispin automation, Evertz routers and switchers is an asset;
  • Knowledge of standard and high definition video platforms, aspect ratios, and file based broadcast operations;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel;
  • Available to work any shift for a 24/7/365 operation including weekends, overnights, and holidays. Able to work on a rotating shift schedule;
  • Bilingualism (French/English) an asset.
