Career Opportunity: Translator

The Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC) is Canada’s window on parliament, politics and public affairs. As Canada’s only national, bilingual media outlet focused exclusively on politics, we are unique in the Canadian media landscape. We are seeking an energetic, detail-oriented translator to contribute to our coverage of Canada’s democracy in action.

THE ROLE:

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced candidate who is capable of quickly translating content from English to French and French to English for live television, digital, online, and print applications. Accuracy and speed are essential.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Produce flawless and creative translations appropriate for television, digital, web, and print within extremely tight deadlines;
  • Proof read and revise, in both English and French, name and context keys for live television, digital and web content, corporate correspondence as well as a variety of other documents.

QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED):

  • Translation certificate or degree in translation from a recognized institution;
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience;
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; exceptional ability to multitask;
  • Proficient in Word and other word-processing software, use of online terminology tools and resources such as Antidote, CP journalistic writing style;
  • General knowledge of CPAC programming, Canadian politics, broadcasting terminology;
  • Knowledge of Dalet and Broadview television software considered an asset;
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team of translators;
  • Ability to keep sensitive material confidential and communicate with internal and external clients in a professional manner;
  • Ability to work flexible, irregular hours and overtime as required.

Career Opportunity: Master Control Operator (Part Time)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complete playback of programming with closed captioning according to traffic schedule while ensuring that technical standards are met, and procedures are followed;
  • Respond to scheduling changes promptly and advise appropriate personnel in a timely manner;
  • Responsible for quality evaluation, troubleshooting, acquisition, and recording of multiple incoming signals;
  • Communicate effectively with feed originators, live production staff, producers, traffic, and management;
  • Accountable for the proper transmission and monitoring of the broadcast signals. Report any faults and abnormalities in transmission of the television signal;
  • Effectively operate the automation system, asset management software, and various peripheral equipment in the master control facility;
  • Work with engineering staff to report faults and ensure that integrity of master control facility is not compromised. Perform basic troubleshooting and equipment maintenance as required;
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED):

  • Knowledge of various production equipment including servers, routers, switchers, graphic systems. Prior experience with Dalet, Chyron graphics, Crispin automation, Evertz routers and switchers is an asset;
  • Knowledge of standard and high definition video platforms, aspect ratios, and file based broadcast operations;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel;
  • Available to work any shift for a 24/7/365 operation including weekends, overnights, and holidays. Able to work on a rotating shift schedule;
  • Bilingualism (French/English) an asset.

Career Opportunity: Motion Graphics Designer

We are looking for a creative media professional to join our innovative and nimble team as a Motion Graphics Designer.

THE ROLE:

The Motion Graphics Designer will create engaging visual content including videos, graphics, and amazing motion design assets. You will contribute at all phases of the creative process and work on a wide swath of projects from broadcast design to producing promotional content for traditional and new media platforms.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Produce world-class broadcast design and visual effects. Create complex 2D and 3D motion graphics and animations incorporating live video content for station branding, show intros, bumpers, snipes, and lower thirds.
  • Create show logos, graphic elements, marketing materials, ads, posters, etc.
  • Develop multimedia campaigns featuring eye-catching motion graphics and innovative designs for web and social media.
  • Provide creative input into all communications and marketing campaigns.
  • Contribute to the overall development of the CPAC brand and sub-brands in collaboration with agencies and freelancers and ensure consistency with the approved visual identities and brand standards.
  • Actively participate in brainstorming sessions with the development team to translate complex ideas into clear messaging and enticing visuals that capture the attention of the intended audiences.
  • Participate in brainstorm sessions.
  • Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED):

  • Proven experience designing for video including at least 5 years of relevant television experience.
  • Highly creative, with an eye for design and a range of skills in motion design including video, animation, VFX, etc.
  • Self-motivated and deadline driven, with the ability to multi-task and manage time effectively while working on multiple campaigns simultaneously.
  • Solid organizational skills and a sense of urgency.
  • Immersed in broadcast and multi-platform design and on top of the latest design trends and developments.
  • Able to optimize content for various platforms including TV, social media, web, and print.
  • Expert skill set with Adobe Creative Suite, Boris, Trapcode Suite, and Cinema 4D.
  • Bilingualism is an asset.

Career Opportunity: Bilingual Copy Editor

We are looking for a detail-oriented writing professional to join our team as a Bilingual Copy Editor.

THE ROLE:

Reporting to the Manager, Communications, the Bilingual Copy Editor is responsible for all aspects of copy-editing and proofing for on-air broadcast elements, web copy, social media and external content. This individual works alongside a team of translators, producers, communications professionals, and administrative staff.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Copy-editing a wide variety of documents, including real-time on-air broadcast graphics, social media postings, digital and web content, communications materials, press releases, and publicity materials;
  • Providing limited substantive editing, when required;
  • Comparing English and French versions of a document to ensure consistency when a document has been translated;
  • Advising staff on language issues, including style, usage, specific terminology, grammar, and formatting;
  • Working with the translation team to maintain and enhance the terminology database and maintaining the translation/copy-editing database;
  • Maintaining the language Style Guide;
  • Providing expert advice to staff on best practices;
  • Other duties, as required.

Career Opportunity: Manager, Programming Operations

We are looking for a Manager, Programming Operations to oversee the production activities of all CPAC production departments.

THE ROLE:

The Manager, Programming Operations oversees the day-to-day production activities of the programming department as well as planning the technical execution of large-scale special projects. This includes ensuring human, operational and financial resources are administered according to CPAC’s budget, policies and strategic priorities. The ideal candidate is self-motivated with a strong work ethic that enables them to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages full and part-time staff, contractors and freelancers. Ensures efficient scheduling of staff and resources, and manages performance as required;
  • Manages CPAC’s assets to maximize programming opportunities;
  • Maintains relationships with external stakeholders, suppliers, and vendors;
  • Guides, directs and mentors all production groups including studio and control room crews, ENG camera, etc.;
  • Monitors adherence to production and technical standards;
  • Identifies and addresses production process issues, develops and ensures efficient workflows;
  • Works alongside editorial and engineering staff. Contributes to annual planning of new equipment and capital purchases;
  • Ensures departmental procurement adheres to financial policies and tracks expenses to ensure they are within budget and approved per financial policies and controls;
  • Assists in the preparation and management of the annual budgets for the department;
  • Participates in staff, communications, and other corporate meetings as required;

QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED):

  • Diploma or degree from technical college or university in telecommunications, video recording, film, radio/television production, or equivalent experience;
  • Five years’ experience in film or television production;
  • Three years’ experience in a supervisory position;
  • Has excellent financial, organizational and time management skills;
  • Has strong project management skills and experience;
  • Utilizes creative problem solving techniques to develop innovative solutions;
  • Creates an environment that recognizes, supports, respects and welcomes diversity of employees;

Career Opportunity: Full-Stack Web Developer

The Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC) is Canada’s window on parliament, politics and public affairs. We are looking for a Full-Stack Web Developer to work as part of our in-house web development team.

THE ROLE:

You will be working as a member of CPAC’s in-house web development team, assisting in the design, construction and testing of both front-end and back-end components of CPAC’s websites and digital platforms and internal operational tools. Design tasks include documentation of existing legacy components and designs to integrate newly built components. Development tasks include components for internal operational web-based tools, public-facing front-end web components, themes and plug-ins, back end scripts, components and strategies to integrate with legacy components using technologies like JSON and XML. You will be required to consult on the latest industry trends and best practices related to platforms like Amazon Web Services and content management systems and frameworks like CrafterCMS, and OctoberCMS.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Establishing, guiding and maintaining website architecture based on knowledge of industry trends and best practices, especially pertaining to high-performance and availability;
  • Designing and implementing new features and functionality of front-end and back-end components (for both internal and external users) using CrafterCMS, OctoberCMS, approved plug-ins, custom code components built using technologies like HTML5, PHP, CSS, Javascript, React, Groovy, and jQuerry;
  • Converting comprehensive layout and wireframes into content served up from CPAC’s websites powered by CrafterCMS, OctoberCMS, CSS and related technologies while maintaining responsive, consistent styles across platforms and browsers wherever possible;
  • Maintaining good architectural design, using interfaces and design patterns to ensure interoperability and isolation of components;
  • Creating, troubleshooting and/or maintaining components that interact with RESTful APIs and formats as required (using JSON, XML);
  • Implementing code using repository-based versioning tools (Git) and rapid application development methodologies;
  • Deploying from a repository to multiple environments (development, QA, UT, production);
  • Troubleshooting and learning aspects and operation of systems that feed the digital content pipeline and other workflows related to CPAC’s website;
  • Working directly with CPAC’s Web Development Lead to establish priorities and timelines on multiple projects;
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED):

  • University degree in related field (Computer Science, Engineering);
  • 3+ years experience in full-stack web development;
  • Strong knowledge of Object Oriented Design and Programming concepts, design patterns, MVC frameworks, and agile methodologies;
  • A strong grasp of HTML5, PHP, SQL, HTML, CSS, Javascript and frameworks built on React and Groovy;
  • Knowledge of standards and design considerations related to responsiveness and accessibility of web-based user experiences;
  • Experience integrating with legacy software systems using data exchange using JSON, XML;
  • A strong grasp of effective QA testing and load/performance testing and optimization;
  • Knowledge of Search Engine Optimization;
  • Experience with any/all of the following is a major asset: Amazon Web Services, streaming players/platforms like JWPlayer, Wowza, Bootstrap, Gulp, WCAG (accessibility guidelines), GraphQL, relational databases including MSSQL, MySQL, NoSQL, MongoDB;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Willingness to upgrade skills as required;
  • Able to perform on-call shifts and work flexible hours (evenings and weekends) as required;
