Conservative committee submission calls for referendum
October 14, 2016 12:33pmET
All-party consensus on the Special Committee on Electoral Reform won’t be possible without support for a referendum, according to the Conservative party.
Scott Reid, the party’s democratic reform critic, said Conservatives have no official position on a specific alternative to Canada’s current First Past the Post system. But there is no flexibility on the referendum question.
The Conservative submission to the committee cites 90.6-per-cent support for a referendum from over 81,000 Canadians who mailed back surveys from 59 Conservative ridings.
The report argues that town hall events and committee “open mic” sessions don’t provide a full representation of Canadian citizens.
