Beyond Politics
Deepak Obhrai
Original air date: March 2010 Catherine Clark talks to Conservative MP Deepak Obhrai about his life Beyond Politics. Conservative MP Deepak Obhrai took a long circuitous route before arriving in Ottawa in 1997 as the newly elected Reform MP for Calgary East, Alta. Raised by a single mom, Deepak was born in Tanzania and lived there until he was in his late teens, when he was sent to a private school in Indore, India. It was there where he met Neena, his future wife, and together they moved back to Tanzania and started a family. Political instability in the region created uncertainty in the Obhrai household and the family emigrated to Canada to seek a stable, secure home for their children. In Calgary, Deepak became very active in the Hindu community and ran provincially before attempting a run at federal politics. To the surprise of many, including himself, Deepak won the first time he ran in 1997.
