COVID-19: Canada Responds
PM Justin Trudeau Provides Update on Federal Response to COVID-19
On Parliament Hill, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau discusses the federal government’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic. He is joined virtually by federal ministers Patty Hajdu (health) and Dominic LeBlanc (intergovernmental affairs), as well as by Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, and Dr. Howard Njoo, deputy chief public health officer. The prime minister announces that the final installment of the federal government’s $19-billion Safe Restart Agreement is being sent to provinces. More funding will be provided if needed for restarting economies, stockpiling personal protective equipment (PPE), and increasing COVID-19 testing and tracing. He faces questions from reporters on federal support for provinces and territories with vaccine distribution, paid sick leave, and calls to prioritize vaccinating essential workers. (April 6, 2021)
