COVID-19: Canada Responds
COVID-19: N.L. Update on Essential Workers and Atlantic Bubble – April 14, 2021
In St. John’s, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, Newfoundland and Labrador’s chief medical officer of health, Andrew Furey, premier of N.L., and John Haggie, minister of health, provide an update on the province’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic. Dr. Fitzgerald announces new testing and isolation requirements for essential workers entering the province. As of April 19, essential workers must be tested for COVID-19 upon their arrival in N.L. and they must self-isolate before starting work until they receive their first negative test result. Premier Furey discusses the decision of the four Atlantic premiers to delay the reopening of the Atlantic bubble from April 19 by at least two weeks to May 3, citing the surge in cases in some parts of the region and the emergence of more transmissible forms of the virus. Originally announced on July 3, 2020, the bubble allowed residents of N.L., New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia to travel freely between those jurisdictions without needing to self-isolate. The premier also comments on N.L.'s offer to provide any assistance in its capacity to Ontario as that province faces a spike in COVID-19 cases. (no interpretation)
