COVID-19: Canada Responds
PM Trudeau on Travel Rules for International Students, COVID-19 Vaccines
On Parliament Hill, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau discusses the federal government’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic. He is joined by federal ministers Chrystia Freeland (finance) and Anita Anand (public services and procurement), as well as by Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, and Dr. Howard Njoo, deputy chief public health officer. The prime minister announces that the federal government will work with Ontario to formalize a request made by Premier Doug Ford to suspend the arrival of international students. Ontario is the only province seeking this restriction. Trudeau also faces questions on the call for tougher travel restrictions, misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces, and on a protest against COVID-19 restrictions that will be held in Montreal on May 1. Minister Anand also announces that Canada's Pfizer BioNTech vaccine doses will now come from the company's manufacturing facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan, rather than from the one in Belgium.
