COVID-19: Canada Responds
Newfoundland and Labrador Enters Transition Phase of Reopening Plan
In St. John’s, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, Newfoundland and Labrador’s chief medical officer of health, and John Haggie, minister of health, provide an update on the COVID-19 situation in the province. Effective June 15, Newfoundland and Labrador entered the transition phase of its reopening plan and eased restrictions on some outdoor activities such as parades and outdoor ceremonial events. Outdoor formal gatherings of up to 150 people with physical distancing are allowed, and up to 30 people are permitted for outdoor personal gatherings. The province has set a target date of July 1 for phase one of its reopening plan. Dr. Fitzgerald announces that the province is moving up second-dose vaccine appointments due to an increase in supply. Premier Andrew Furey announced the previous day that the province would be opening up to the rest of Atlantic Canada on June 23. Residents of Atlantic provinces will not be required to be tested or self-isolate provided certain criteria are met, such as having not travelled outside the Atlantic region within the last 14 days. Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island have also announced they would be reopening their border to the other Atlantic provinces on June 23. (June 16, 2021) (no interpretation)
